Washing a car in Cape Town: the water rules (21 October 2026)
There are no water restrictions in Cape Town as of 21 October 2026. The City lifted its drought restrictions on 1 November 2020 and says the permanent rules in its Water By-law still apply, whatever the restriction level. All our areas are in the City of Cape Town.
One of those permanent rules is about car washing: a hosepipe used for washing vehicles, boats and caravans must be fitted with an automatic self-closing device.
That may change. The dams that supply Cape Town have been falling since winter and were at 74.4% on 14 October 2026, and the Department of Water and Sanitation’s annual operating analysis meeting on 2 November 2026 will consider whether restrictions are needed. Check the City’s water page before you plan a big wash at home.
