Gulls, salt and paint at the harbour
Wash bird droppings off soon. SAMBRA, the South African Motor Body Repair Association, warns that bird droppings contain acidic components that can stain paint if they are left to dry, and a car parked near the harbour or the beach collects its share.
The same advice covers the sea air: salty coastal air damages paintwork, so cars that live at the coast need washing more often. A hand wash at home makes that easy to keep up.
Gordon’s Bay and the Steenbras dams
The Steenbras dams sit in the mountains behind Gordon’s Bay, and they are part of the system that supplies Cape Town. On 14 October 2026 Lower Steenbras was at 47%, one of the lowest of those dams, with the system as a whole at 74.4%.
As of 21 October 2026 no water restrictions are in force in the City of Cape Town, which includes Gordon’s Bay. The Department of Water and Sanitation’s annual operating analysis meeting on 2 November 2026 will consider whether restrictions are needed. Until then the City’s permanent rule applies: a hosepipe used to wash a vehicle must have an automatic self-closing device.
